Topless Lamborghini Huracan Spyder LP580-2 puts 580hp to rear wheels alone.

What's the news?

Lamborghini has fleshed out the Huracan family by adding the obvious 'missing piece' to the four-car line-up in the form of the Spyder LP580-2, a rear-wheel drive convertible model.

After the LP610-4 - which stands for 610hp and four-wheel drive - was launched as a coupe and then a Spyder open-top, Lamborghini decided to do an 'entry-level' hardtop version called the LP580-2: denoting a slightly detuned 5.2-litre normally aspirated engine and drive to the rear axle alone.

Well, this is the expected soft-top version of that 580hp variant, announced about a year after its coupe sibling was revealed just before the 2015 Los Angeles Motor Show.

As explained, the Spyder has exactly the same 580hp/540Nm V10 drivetrain as the coupe, but it is 1,509kg all-in and therefore 120kg heavier than the tin-top. That leads to slightly blunted, but still phenomenally quick, acceleration numbers, as the LP580-2 Spyder does 0-100km/h in 3.6 seconds (+0.2s on the coupe). However, on an unrestricted bit of road, it is also 1km/h quicker than the coupe at 319km/h flat out.

There's a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and 19-inch Kari alloys wrapped in bespoke Pirelli P Zero tyres, both features seen on the coupe LP580-2, but of course the Spyder's piece de resistance is the folding fabric roofed, which can be raised/lowered in just 17 seconds, even while on the move at speeds of up to 50km/h. Two fins rise out of the roof's cover when it's folded down and these are designed to channel more air into the engine compartment.

No exact cost figures are yet confirmed but Lamborghini would at least admit that it will be priced to sit between the LP580-2 and LP610-4 coupe models, which makes perfect sense.

Anything else?

"The rear-wheel drive Spyder enlarges the Huracan family's core product range," said Stefano Domenicali, Lamborghini's chairman and CEO. "It offers the lifestyle appeal of open-air motoring with the pure thrill of rear-wheel drive engineering. This is a Lamborghini for those with a passion for life and the purest driving experience on the open road. It's also a Huracan for those entering the Lamborghini family, wanting a true Spyder experience without compromising on the performance and dynamic handling of a rear-wheel drive car."
