Next version of the ID electric concept is this modern-day Type 2.

What's the news?

Volkswagen will bring the second concept car of its new ID all-electric family to the Detroit Auto Show, and from these heavily cropped teaser images we're pretty confident that it's a battery-powered update of the classic Type 2 Transporter and Kombi Microbus.

This one is expressly designed for autonomous operation, and a press of the Volkswagen logo in the steering wheel hub will see the wheel and pedals retract away into the dash, leaving the space more open for relaxing while the robots take the strain.

According to Volkswagen: "the I.D. concept vehicle in Detroit forges links between the legendary origins of the Volkswagen brand and its electrifying future. Its overall concept is revolutionary. It combines ample space for travel with a long electric driving range. A new feeling of freedom - with zero emissions. A new epoch of mobility."

Being as it's based on the same tech we saw under the Golf-sized ID hatchback at the Paris Motor Show back in October, expect it to have a one-charge range of between 400km and 500km.
