What's the news?
Mercedes has added the extra grip of its 4Matic all-wheel drive technology to the E 220 d Saloon and Estate models, bringing additional peace of mind for drivers who have to endure adverse weather conditions.
Powered by the same 194hp/400Nm 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine mated to a nine-speed 9G-Tronic gearbox as found in the rear-wheel drive (RWD) E 220 d models, the 4Matic cars have slightly less impressive eco-stats as payment for their all-weather prowess. The RWD Saloon can give back bests of 3.9 litres/100km (72.4mpg) and 102g/km, while the similarly rear-driven E 220 d Estate's equivalent numbers are 4.2 litres/100km (67.3mpg) and 109g/km; equipping 4Matic sees the four-door's data shift to 4.5 litres/100km (62.8mpg) and 117g/km, while the Estate drifts to 4.9 litres/100km (57.7mpg) and 126g/km.
Those 4Matic figures are enough to move both the new E 220 d models from the RWD versions' Band A3 tax rating (€190 per annum), the Saloon moving into Band A4 (€200/annum) and the wagon out to Band B1 (€270/annum).
Anything else?
Prices are not yet confirmed for the 4Matic models but expect them to come in the same Avantgarde, Exclusive and AMG Line specifications as the RWD E 220 d cars, with four-wheel drive likely to cost a few thousand euro extra. As an indicator of price, the E 220 d Avantgarde Saloon starts at €48,015, so the 4Matics will be in excess of €50,000.
