It’s a Unimog-based, AMG-powered, half-convertible Mercedes G-Class, from Maybach.

What's the news?

This behemoth is perhaps one of the last incarnations of Mercedes' evergreen G-Class. Its correct name is the Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulet and just 99 examples of this most extreme show of incredible wealth will be made.

It is in an incredible hybrid of the boxy G-Class body, some AMG know-how in terms of the engine, the underpinnings of a Unimog and the sheer unrivalled luxury of the Maybach Landaulet heritage.

Up front, the Mercedes-Maybach G 650 has an engine from AMG, namely the 6.0-litre V12 biturbo delivering 630hp and 1,000Nm. Fuel economy is said to be a laughable 17 litres/100km (16.6mpg) with horrendous CO2 emissions of 397g/km, although as this monster isn't coming to Ireland, there's little for us to worry about.

This mighty motor is powering a body that is 5,345mm long, 2,235mm tall and possessed of 450mm of ground clearance, along with a 3,428mm wheelbase. Strangely, despite these colossal dimensions, the Landaulet is a four-seater only... but the passengers in the back travel in the most opulent fashion. This is a car for those who like to be driven, rather than to drive - it's the rear passengers who will benefit from the Landaulet's open-top functionality, as the electric fabric hood covers the back half of the car, and so it is they who have individual seats with massage functions, inflatable air cushions, calf-rests, the ability to shut the paupers in the front of the G 650 off with a glass partition that can be turned opaque, thermal cup holders, individual monitors for entertainment and table tops with leather inserts to 'provide a comfortable writing surface'. No, really.

The G 650 sits on gigantic 22-inch five-twin-spoke alloy wheels with 325/55 tyres wrapped around them, while the portal axles are the same ones used on the almost-equally-ridiculous AMG G 63 6x6 and G 500 4x42 models. Two-tone Designo upholstery is found within, while 'V12 Biturbo' badges leave you in no doubt as to what you're looking at... as if you couldn't identify a semi-convertible G-Class that sits nearly half a metre off the deck.

Just 99 Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulets will be made, with the outlandish vehicle making its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March. It's likely that most of these cars will go to the Middle East.
