What's the news?
Some cars come to the Geneva show with mild facelifts, or gently updated interiors. Not the new Lamborghini Huracan Performante. In typical Lambo fashion, the supercar will debut basking in the glory of a record-breaking Nurburgring lap. How does 20.6km in 6min 52.01secs sound?
While Radical's bonkers SR8LM has gone slightly quicker in the past, that is just a bona-fide racer with numberplates. The Huracan fits the true definition of a production car, and to beat the mighty Porsche 918 by five seconds is no mean feat.
CEO Stefano Domenicali enthused: "To make this happen is something that every one of the R&D team who worked on this car can share in: it will forever be a defining moment in their careers. I am so proud of everything achieved by Lamborghini people that day and extremely privileged to have witnessed it."
The record was actually set last October in a pre-production Performante, still clad in full camo disguise. Pirelli's Trofeo R rubber was used, and active aerodynamics are alleged to have been involved, but that's as much as we know for the moment. Full details will be revealed next week, so for now just enjoy the smoothness of Lambo test driver Marco Mapelli's inputs and that glorious noise as he attacks every metre of the hallowed track.
