What's the news?
We love the Transporter-based Volkswagen California camper van, but for all its style and utility, it does lack one thing - an on-board toilet. Well, Volkswagen has just fixed that issue by revealing the California XXL, based on the massive Crafter van, and thanks to the extra room, there's a fully-equipped 'wet room' shower and toilet inside. No more running to freezing, smelly toilet blocks when camping.
The extra space makes itself felt in other areas too. There's now a massive two-metre double bed for sleeping, and a fully fitted galley-style kitchen including a sink, fridge, hob, and extending worktop. There's even a separate, screened-off living area with swivelling seats. Volkswagen says that "the California based on the most popular campervan ever - the Bulli - serves as the archetypal motorhome. For decades it won the hearts of thousands, especially experienced camping enthusiasts, with a systematically thought-out and highly flexible interior. Now, the new and bigger Crafter with its large number of driver assistance systems, comfortable handling and low fuel consumption offers a unique opportunity to transfer the qualities of the California to the next size up in Volkswagen motorhomes and to refine these still further. The California XXL concept vehicle now being presented by the Hannover-based manufacturer is a more fully-grown variant of the motoring globetrotter."
The new model will be first shown to the public on the 26th of August at the Caravan Salon Düsseldorf.
