Is this electric SUV the new Mitsubishi Evo?

What's the news?

Mitsubishi, after a certain amount of teasing, has revealed its concept car for the Tokyo motor show - an all-electric four-wheel drive crossover called the e-Evolution. Both the name, and the inclusion of the legendary Active Yaw Control system; a major part of the appeal of all those classic rally-homologation Evos of old.

The e-Evolution uses three electric motors; one for the front axle and two for the rear, one for each wheel. That's the yaw control bit, the two rear motors making up a new Dual Motor Active Yaw Control system which can precisely metre out torque to an individual wheel to sharpen up the traction, grip, and handling.

Mitsubishi claims that the car has an artificial intelligence system that takes the driver's inputs and, fighter-jet-style, interprets them for best possible effect. It's even supposed to be able to help a less skilful driver to get the best from the car. There's a setting that works to discover the driver's skill level, and then concocts a training programme to help them work better with the car's abilities.

As a result, says Mitsubishi: "drivers of all abilities quickly experience a vehicle that behaves the way they want it and soon they find themselves enjoying the driving experience to an even greater degree."

Mitsubishi will also demonstrate a new artificial intelligence assistant, which is designed to recognise passengers by speech patterns, learn more about their likes and dislikes, and be able to communicate between both car and home. It can allow you to control systems such as lights and wipers with voice control, or allow you to connect to a drone to take a look at traffic up ahead or give yourself a birds eye view of the local scenery.

There will also be a demonstration of connected tech using Amazon's 'Alexa' digital personal assistant.
