McLaren's special ops department creates matching cars for special client.

What's the news?

Have you ever wondered about having two of the same thing, so that you always have one spare? A town-and-country pair? One for the weekly commute, one for the weekend? Well, one McLaren customer, presumably deep of pocket, has decided that's exactly what they wanted and commissioned the company to create a matching pair of specially-made cars.

McLaren Special Operations (MSO) created the two cars, which bear a resemblance to the existing 570S but are actually unique, based around the same carbon core structure and 3.8-litre twin-turbo engine. They're called the MSO R Coupe and Spider.

One is a hard-top, and the other a Spider convertible, and both get the same Liquid Silver paint job (the coupe's in satin-matte, the Spider in gloss) with a central stripe of naked carbon-fibre. Both get the same twin-element rear wing and front splitter.

The bumper, bonnet, louvred wheelarches, roof scoop (for the coupe), and the rear deck are all finished in a special MSO Visual Carbon Fibre style, while there's also red pinstriping around some of the exterior elements. Both cars get the same black-finished wheel design, matte-black for the Coupe, gloss black for the Spider.

Inside, both cars get the same interior, which uses black Alcantara with red stitching for the cabin, and red Alcantara with black stitching for the seats.

This isn't just a visual makeover either. The M838TL V8 turbo engine in both cars has been modified from standard so that it now has a fairly senior 688hp and 700Nm of torque, thanks to a part-titanium exhaust system.

"An MSO Personal Commission is the highest level of partnership between a customer and McLaren Special Operations, undertaken to design, develop and create unique interpretations of McLaren cars, expertly tailored to meet the exact requirements of the owner. A typical MSO Personal Commission extends beyond paint colours and materials and finishes to encompass changes to body and interior design and also dynamic and powertrain enhancements as required. The result is a McLaren personalised by MSO to become a car that is literally one of a kind - or in the case of these stunning MSO R cars, one of a matched pair" said Jolyon Nash, Executive Director, Global Sales and Marketing, McLaren Automotive.
