Porsche isn't giving anything away about its next new model, the Cajun small SUV, but it has confirmed that a new factory is being built to produce the car.
Work will start later in 2011 on the new plant in Leipzig, Germany, where the Panamera and Cayenne models are already made. A new body assembly and paint shop are being built purely for the Cajun, which is expected to go on sale late in 2012.
"During the production of the Cayenne and the Panamera, our Leipzig plant has impressively proved that it can produce premium vehicles of highest quality," said Matthias Müller, chairman of the Porsche AG board of management. "The decision in favour of this location is proof of our trust in the skills and qualifications of our Leipzig associates, and at the same time another contribution to the economic advancement of the region."
The new plant will create 1,000 jobs in the area, plus further positions at Porsche's headquarters in Stuttgart.
As far as how the Cajun will perform, Porsche says it will be "efficient, refined and agile to meet the high demand for this type of vehicle all over the world." Porsche sees the Cajun as an entry-level model that will introduce younger customers to the company in the same way the Boxster has for sports car buyers.
