Mercedes-Benz has revealed the AMG version of its C-Class Coupé before the regular version has a chance to hit the showroom. The C 63 AMG is a direct rival for the BMW M3 and Audi RS 5, but it packs a killer punch.
At first glance, the tech specs indicate that the new C 63 AMG Coupé is a fraction quicker accelerating than its two rivals, with 0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds. That's thanks to the 6.2-litre V8 engine under the bonnet. It's the well-proven naturally aspirated unit as fitted to the C 63 AMG saloon and estate. Peak power is quoted as 457hp at 6,800rpm, with 600Nm of torque produced at 5,000rpm. Not bad.
However, Mercedes will offer buyers the choice of an AMG Performance Package. Along with composite front brake discs, red-painted callipers, a carbon fibre boot spoiler and a bespoke steering wheel, this includes a significant engine upgrade, with a power boost to 487hp. Components from the SLS AMG's engine were used to achieve this figure and it knocks another tenth of a second off the 0-100km/h time.
The only transmission available is the seven-speed AMG Speedshift MCT automatic. Several modes of operation are available and Mercedes quotes a shift time of 100 milliseconds when in S+ or M. The driver can change gear via paddles mounted behind the steering wheel and there's a 'Race Start' function to 'explore the vehicle's full acceleration capability.' Sadly the mechanical limited slip differential on the rear axle is optional.
As in the other C 63 models, the AMG Coupé features different suspension components all-round and a wider track than its regular two-door relatives. AMG's speed sensitive power steering system is also fitted, while drivers can choose between three stages of ESP intervention, including fully off.
While the C 63 has had a substantial visual makeover, it's still relatively restrained. Up front there's a power-domed bonnet and deeper front bumper with LED daytime running lights. The rear view is dominated by the quad exhaust and dark diffuser-like centre section in the new bumper. As standard Mercedes fits 18-inch alloys though there are 19-inch options available.
In some markets, the launch is marked by a limited 'Edition 1' model, which has visual enhancements inside and out, including the option of a matt black finish to the paintwork. The C 63 AMG Coupé goes on sale this summer and though prices have yet to be confirmed, we expect the new car to come in at under €120,000.
