Land Rover to revive two-door Range Rover

Land Rover to revive two-door Range Rover

What's the news?

It's been a long, long time since we had a two-door Range Rover, but - as part of Land Rover's 70th anniversary celebrations, which have already brought us the madcap Land Rover Defender Works V8 70th Edition - now we've got another startling new product from the company: the Range Rover SV Coupe.

Land Rover refers to this newcomer as a two-door because the original 1970 machine was launched in the same configuration (a five-door Range Rover didn't officially appear until 1981) and is therefore the inspiration for this new vehicle. Just one teaser image has been revealed of the SV Coupe, due to make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, and it's a plan-view of the interior. It shows the lack of back doors, but also a surprising amount of rear legroom in this four-seat machine.

Some bad news, though; production of the Range Rover SV Coupe is going to be limited to 999 vehicles worldwide. It's actually a Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) creation, the clue being the 'SV' in the model's name, and so it will be hand-assembled at the SV Technical Centre in Warwickshire, over in the UK.

Land Rover says that the interior image released 'illustrates the traditional skills combined with up-to-the-minute technologies utilised throughout the cabin to exquisite effect. Stunning to the eye, sumptuous to the touch, it is a light, contemporary, space where attention to detail has been paramount'. So now you know.

Anything else?

Gerry McGovern, Land Rover's chief design officer, said: "The Range Rover SV Coupe is a highly compelling design with peerless refinement and uncompromised sophistication, from its breath-taking exterior proportions to its sumptuous, beautifully appointed, interior. This is a vehicle that will resonate on an emotional level."

And John Edwards, Land Rover Special Operations' managing director, added: "Land Rover created the luxury SUV sector with Range Rover almost 50 years ago. In launching the new Range Rover SV Coupe, we will offer clients an alluring combination of peerless luxury and rarity. Unveiling this special vehicle at Geneva International Motor Show in March, during Land Rover's 70th Anniversary year, will be a defining moment for Land Rover, the Range Rover portfolio and Special Vehicle Operations."

More details on the technical specification of the Range Rover SV Coupe will be revealed in the run-up to the Geneva event.
