What's the news?
Lexus will bring its long-awaited UX compact crossover to the Geneva motor show next week, packing hybrid power and the same platform as the Toyota C-HR.
It won't be an entirely hybrid model - Lexus has registered UX200, UX250, and UX250h badges so far, so some countries will get all-petrol versions, but as with the rest of the Lexus range in Ireland, the UX will be sold almost exclusively as a hybrid, sharing a powertrain with the current RAV4 Hybrid.
Style-wise, this will be one of the most distinctive Lexus of all, which is really saying something, It blends the big grille and swept-back lights look of the larger RX450h, with some chunky black plastic detailing that gives it come of the flavour of the smaller Hyundai Kona crossover. There's also a distinctive full-width LED tail-light panel at the back.
Inside, there's a new infotainment screen, very wide and shallow, that looks closely related to the one used in the new LS saloon.
It's also quite likely that the UX will, eventually, replace the current CT200h hybrid hatchback. Although a good seller for Lexus, the small hatch is based on two-generation-old Prius technology, and lacks for both rear seat space and boot volume, something that should most definitely not be the case with the UX.
Lexus says that the UX has "exceptional body rigidity and a low centre of gravity for exceptional handling" while the cabin "combines a highly focused driver's cockpit with a wide and inviting passenger space."
We'll find out more about the UX, its hybrid system, performance figures, and sales prospects when the covers are officially taken off at the Geneva motor show next week, where it will share stand space with the new RX-L, which now comes with seven seats for the first time.
