New engines and mildly tweaked styling for the Hyundai Tucson.

What's the news?

Hyundai has shown off the updated Tucson SUV at the New York International Auto Show, and it'll land in Ireland later this year with new engines and improved active safety systems.

The biggest changes are in the engine bay, where the current 1.7-litre and 2.0-litre diesels make way for a new 1.6-litre diesel engine, in 115hp or 133hp states of tune, and a new 2.0-litre diesel producing 186hp. Four-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission will be optional for all engines.

There are also two petrol offerings - one is an updated version of the current basic Tucson engine, the 132hp direct-injection 1.6-litre unit, and the other is the 1.6-litre turbo, with 177hp, lifted from the Kona crossover. That engine comes with a choice of a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed DCT dual-clutch automatic transmission.

On the styling front, there are new headlights and tail-lights, tweaked bumpers and grille. It's a little sharper looking, but Ireland's thousands of now-loyal Tucson buyers (it has been the best-selling car in the country since 2016) won't be too upset nor surprised by the new look.

Inside, there's now a seven-inch infotainment touchscreen as standard (coming with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) and a larger eight-inch screen as an option. There's also a new optional high-end sound system designed by audio experts Krell, and wireless phone charging tech.

The safety package has also been updated and now the Tucson can be optionally equipped with autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping steering, driver attention monitor, speed sign recognition, a 360-degree camera system, LED lights, rain sensing wipers and adaptive cruise control.

Sales of the updated Tucson will start in the summer.
