Renault Arkana will be sold in Russia and Asia – and maybe Europe.

What's the news?

This is the Renault Arkana, a new C-segment coupe-crossover from the French marque - but don't get too excited, as this model is not confirmed for Europe as yet.

Unveiled at the Moscow Motor Show that is taking place in Russia right now, the Arkana is said to be the first C-segment coupe-crossover going, although Toyota might argue the toss on that one, given it got the C-HR to market two years ago.

Renault talks about the Arkana having the 'elegance of a saloon with the sturdiness of an SUV', and draws attention to the SUV's high waistline and sloping roofline. There's a panoramic glass section up top, chrome detailing on the sides, wide wheel arches housing 19-inch alloys and plenty of ground clearance, to ensure the Arkana can actually drive off-road - rather than just looking like it can.

Production of the Arkana will take place in various global manufacturing sites within Groupe Renault, with Russia being the first country that will sell the new SUV. From there, it will spread into Asian markets, but there are no plans for it to come to Europe as yet. The Arkana will form part of Renault's 'Drive The Future' plan, in which it wants to sell five million vehicles annually by 2022.

Russia is Renault's second-biggest market, as it took a third of sales in the country in 2017 (448,270 vehicles sold, with 28 per cent market share), and Renault thinks it will be its biggest sales ground by the time Drive The Future concludes in 2022. Nicolas Maure, senior vice-president and chairman for the Eurasia Region of Groupe Renault, said: "The idea for this innovative concept came from Russia and the project was conducted with the strong involvement of Renault Russia teams. Arkana will meet Russian customers' aspirations but also the ones of new customers in many countries worldwide, enabling Groupe Renault to further pursue its international growth as part of its Drive The Future strategic plan."

Anything else?

Laurens Van den Acker, senior vice-president for Groupe Renault's Corporate Design, said: "The Arkana show car is a distinctive coupe-crossover, striking balance between the elegance of a saloon and the powerful stance of an SUV. We have dialled in specific Renault cues, with a strong design, strength and sensuality with a French touch."
