What's the news?
BMW has let its M division loose on the X2 SUV and the result is called the X2 M35i, defined as an M Performance vehicle rather than the full-bananas M car.
Exterior
The BMW X2 M35i's styling package is based on that of the M Sport specification, so there's a sporty body kit including a larger roof spoiler and, as with all M Performance cars, accents in Cerium Grey. Two large 100mm exhaust outlets dominate the rear view, while 19-inch alloys are standard. Buyers can upgrade to the tasty 20-inch rims shown in these initial images for a fee.
Interior
Inside, the X2 M35i again is based on the M Sport package, though there are plenty of 'M35i' signifiers to be found, along with the new option of M sports seats with integrated headrests and matching seatbelts.
Mechanicals
At the heart of this X2 is a new high-performance development of BMW's 2.0-litre TwinPower Turbo petrol engine, including a redesigned cooling system. Peak outputs are quoted at 306hp and 450Nm and, using the standard eight-speed Steptronic automatic's launch control facility, the M35i will dispatch the 0-100km/h time in just 4.9 seconds. Naturally, xDrive four-wheel drive is standard. Passive M Sport suspension is also standard, with stiffer springs and dampers than in other X2s, plus a lower ride height. Two-mode adaptive suspension is an option. The steering is said to be tweaked, the brakes are upgraded and, most interestingly, there's a new M Sport differential on the front axle to help with traction.
Anything else?
The new BMW X2 M35i is expected to make its public debut at next month's Paris Motor Show, though won't go on sale in Europe until March 2019.
