Dacia Duster will now get 130hp and 150hp engines for 2019.

What's the news?

Dacia doesn't have any new cars to show at the Paris Motor Show, but it does have some new engines for the Duster, engines that will continue the Duster's recent move away from its bargain bucket beginnings, and towards a little more sophistication.

The new 1.3-litre turbo petrol engines are actually shared with Mercedes, which means your bargain Duster can be had with the same powerplant as a Mercedes A-Class. Not bad, eh?

They're clever engines too, using a 'Bore Spray Coating' technology that helps to control temperature in the engine, and a GPF - or 'Gasoline Particulate Filter' - that helps to catch any nasty bits of dust and soot that are made by direct-injection petrol engines.

The lesser powered engine mixes 130hp with 240Nm of torque, while the 150hp version also produces up to 250Nm. Order books for these new engines will open at the end of the year, and by the middle of next year they'll be available with optional four-wheel drive.

The Duster is also getting an upgraded new infotainment media system, which will now come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as speedier and smoother responses when you prod it with your fingers.

Dacia is having a pretty good year as it turns out. For the first half of the year its European sales were up by 14.6 per cent, with more than a quarter of a million registrations across the continent.

Anything else?

Rather more worryingly, Dacia is celebrating the fact that it has sold more than five million cars with a new project called Dacia Road Stories. In this, it has worked with nine 'influencers' who have been driving the new Duster through Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, the United Kingdom and France and have come up with a series of guides and journey planners that are available on Dacia's website, on Instagram, or as an actual, proper book.
