What's the news?
Toyota has used the Geneva Motor Show to display a racing concept version of the Supra, which is called the GR Supra GT4 Concept.
Designed to be an affordable and competitive entry into motorsport, the Supra has been designed to meet regulations for GT4 series around the globe - said to be one of the fastest-growing categories worldwide.
Power comes from the 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six petrol used in the road car, but a retuned engine management system means it delivers more output than the regular Toyota coupe. It also boasts motorsport-spec driveshafts, a meatier limited-slip differential and competition springs, dampers and anti-roll bars. High-performance Brembo brakes provide the stopping power, while a full aero kit - with a front diffuser and a large rear wing - reduces drag and optimises downforce.
One area where the GT4 Concept doesn't match the road-going GR Supra is for wheel sizes, as the competition version uses 18-inch racing wheels, rather than the road car's 19-inch alloys. However, the GT4 Concept is slightly longer and lower than the showroom Toyota.
Inside, the GR Supra GT4 Concept boasts a high-strength rollcage, a competition-standard fire extinguisher and OMP racing seat, while a fast refuelling system with a motorsport-spec fuel tank are also fitted.
Anything else?
The car revealed in Geneva looks as if it is a foregone conclusion that Toyota will make the Supra GT4 available to customers, but Toyota Gazoo Racing said it will 'evaluate interest from potential customers before deciding on any further development' of the car. If it does go into production, TGR wants it to be aimed more at the amateur teams and aspiring professional drivers, in a bid to support grass-roots motorsport. And if you can't wait to see if TGR gives the project the green light, then you might be pleased to know that a GR Supra will compete in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring endurance race for 2019, due to be held in June.
