Mad German tuners go full beast-mode with the Brabus 800 Widestar.

What's the news?

Left with the nagging feeling that your 580-odd-hp Mercedes-AMG G 63 just isn't quite quick, powerful, nor aggressive enough? Well, good news - the mildly demented (but in a good way) people at Brabus has just created the 800hp Widestar.

Yup, it's a G-Class (wait, can we still just call it G-Wagen? Please?) which has, apparently, been to either a gym or a Russian hitman training academy. In that it's both astonishingly mean-looking, and sure as heck has the firepower to back it up.

Brabus started with its 700 PowerXtra V8 engine, itself a development of AMG's fearsome 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. Figuring that 700hp was for little wussies, Brabus has now developed an '800 PowerXtra +' tuning setup for the engine. This involves replacing the production turbochargers with Brabus' own units, which each produce turbo pressure of 1.6-bar.

The engine management system has also been remapped and reworked, to help unleash the beastly power. In spite of all the extra grunt (it has an astonishing 1000Nm of torque too) Brabus claims that, according to its extensive bench-testing, the engine has "flawless durability." Hence why it's prepared to offer a three-year, 100,000km warranty on it.

0-100km/h is done within 4.1 seconds, and the top speed - limited by weight more than anything - is 240km/h. It is, of course, four-wheel drive, with power transmitted through a beefed-up version of Merc's 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic gearbox.

There's also a stainless steel exhaust, which has (natch) a loud, shouty-Arnold-Schwarzenegger mode, but also a more discreet, neighbour-friendly quiet mode.

Style-wise, the Widestar lives up to its name by having massive, flared wheelarches, wrapped around 23-inch rims, that add 40mm to the overall width of the G-Class. There's also a cavernous front bumper air intake, a massive, nostrilled, power bulge on the bonnet, and sidesteps with built-in LED lighting. Y'know, for subtlety. It even gets piercing LED roof lights (perfect for muscling slower cars out of the fast lane on the Autobahn) and a unique Brabus interior with a 'Starry Sky' headliner filled with tiny LED lights.

CO2 emissions? Pardon our sniggers, but it's 345g/km. Combined fuel economy is a similarly laughable 13.1 litres per 100km (or 21mpg).
