Volvo has revealed a new luxury saloon design study named Concept Universe at the Shanghai Auto Show. The large luxury concept, the first to be unveiled by Volvo under its new Chinese owners, points to the firm's ambitions to create a rival to cars like Audi's A8, BMW's 7 Series and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
Its styling takes cues from Volvo's past, with the bonnet and front lights reminiscent of the pre-brick design era Volvo PV544, while the scalloped sides draw influence from Volvo's more recent models.
The interior is said to demonstrate the best elements of Scandinavian design, with the emphasis on simplicity and ease of use. The use of touch-screens that approach the hand and ultra-comfortable chairs for all passengers underline's Volvo's focus.
"Just like fine luxury goods, this design feels handcrafted and durable enough to stand the test of time," says Peter Horbury, Vice President Design at Volvo Car Corporation. "We will compete with the best with our special kind of Scandinavian Design. It is unmatched in performance and technology, but without superficiality or complication."
Volvo is keen to establish itself as a player in the rapidly expanding Chinese marketplace, with Stefan Jacoby stating: "We are eager to hear what the most demanding Chinese customers think of this luxurious concept."
The Concept Universe will tour the world (as opposed to the universe) soon, with it scheduled to appear at motor shows in both Europe and the USA.
