Ford has boldly stated it will launch 15 new models into the Chinese market by 2015. It made the statement at the opening of the Shanghai motor show.
The move will more than double the number of dealers Ford has in China at present - to more than 700 - and create 1,200 new jobs. As part of the One Plan, Ford intends to use global platforms from cars such as the Focus and Mondeo to allow rapid expansion in China.
Ford's Asia Pacific president, Joe Hinrichs, said: "We are reinforcing our commitment to offer a full portfolio of vehicles to our Chinese customers. Our new line-up will significantly strengthen Ford's existing segments and drive new growth in others. These 15 new vehicles are part of Ford's plans to introduce 50 new products and powertrains to the region by 2015."
The new Ford Focus will go into production in China in 2012 at a new plant in Chongqing, where 150,000 cars will be produced annually.
Sales of new Fords were up 19 per cent in the first quarter of 2011 in China and the company expects 70 per cent of its sales growth in the next 10 years will be in the Asia Pacific and African regions.
