Jeep may be better known for its off-road prowess, but the new Grand Cherokee SRT8 has the straight-line performance to keep up with most super saloons. Top speed is limited to 155mph, but the SRT8 can still crack 0-100km/h in about five seconds.
Helping the SRT8 to such swift numbers is a 471hp 6.4-litre V8 engine, driving through an automatic gearbox. Full-time four-wheel drive remains part of the SRT8's specification and it offers 13 per cent better fuel economy than the previous SRT8 model.
Staying true to its off-road genes, the SRT8 also comes with Jeep's Selec-Track system with five selectable modes. There's Sport, Normal and three off-road settings to help the SRT8 cope with rough terrain.
Along with the ballistic performance, the SRT8 comes with unique alloy wheels, uprated stereo and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for the gearbox. No word on price as yet, but the Grand Cherokee SRT8 makes its debut at this week's New York International Auto Show.
