Complete redesign for Subaru Impreza

Subaru has unveiled an all-new version of the Impreza at the New York Auto Show.

The all-new Subaru Impreza has made its debut at the New York International Auto Show along with a new entry-level 1.6-litre 'boxer' engine.

Subaru will replace the short-lived and unloved current Impreza model in 2012 in Ireland. The new car is fractionally shorter than the one it replaces but has a longer wheelbase for extra cabin space and driving stability.

The windscreen pillars of the new Impreza sit some 200mm further forward than the outgoing car's. This creates more interior space and longer front doors for easier access, while the rear doors are also longer for better entry and exit.

On top of that Subaru has made the A-pillars thinner for improved forward visibility, while inside, the instrument panel is lower and flatter to further the impression of interior space. A larger boot is augmented by 60/40 split-fold rear seats and the cargo cover can now be stored under the boot floor when not needed.

The rest of the interior has come in for a quality upgrade from Subaru, with soft-touch materials to give a classier feel. New front seats come with lumbar support as standard too. Subaru is also promising a high level of standard equipment, as well as alloy wheels across the range.

There's a new 1.6-litre flat-four boxer engine that comes with either a five-speed manual gearbox or CVT (continuously variable transmission) with six pre-programmed gear steps that work with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Subaru says it has improved fuel economy for the new Impreza and that ride and handling have been enhanced with strengthened suspension components.

No word on prices yet, which will be announced closer to the new Impreza's launch. Subaru Ireland has yet to confirm if both four-door saloon and five-door hatchback versions of the new Impreza will be sold here.
