Volkswagen Ireland is going to offer Irish buyers a major incentive to trade up to a newer, cleaner, car next year.
'Climate Action Grant'
Volkswagen will offer a new 'Climate Action Grant' to buyers trading in an older car, one that complies with the old Euro 1-4 emissions regulations (essentially cars built before September 2015, for the most part). The incentive package runs from €1,750 to as much as €5,000, depending on the model you're thinking of buying.
Volkswagen claims that this will give "customers the chance to play their part towards reaching the goals of the Government's Climate Action Plan, by replacing their existing vehicle into a new, cleaner Euro 6 plug-in hybrid (PHEV), fully electric, petrol or diesel vehicle."
The company says that all of its current range meets the latest Euro 6 emissions standards, so essentially this is a special offer package aimed at bringing buyers in for the January new car sales rush.
Volkswagen recognises the challenge of climate change
"Volkswagen recognises that climate change is one of the most significant challenges of our times. With transport accounting for 14 per cent of global CO2 emissions, it is imperative that we begin the reduction of emissions from vehicles on Irish roads," said Volkswagen Ireland Brand Director Gerrit Heimberg.
"By replacing the existing one per cent additional VRT diesel surcharge and introducing a NOx emissions tax in the Budget 2020, the Government has sent a clear signal that not only fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, but also the latest EU6 petrol and diesel models play a key role in achieving our climate targets. Our Volkswagen Climate Action Grant, with its scrappage element, enables customers to change into a new, cleaner model whilst ensuring that their older vehicle is removed from Irish roads. This results in a positive impact on our environment," adds Heimberg.
As much as €5,000 off
So, assuming you're trading in an older car, you can get €1,750 off the price of a new Polo; €3,000 off a Golf (albeit not yet the new Golf 8 that arrives later next year); €2,000 off a T-Roc; €3,000 off an electric e-Golf; €3,500 off a Tiguan or Tiguan Allspace; €4,000 off a Touran; €4,000 off a Passat or a Passat GTE plug-in hybrid; €4,500 off an Arteon; and €5,000 off a Touareg.
The car being traded in must have been registered in the owner's name for at least six months, and the offer applies to new Volkswagens ordered from the 9th of October until the 30th of June next year.
