This wild-looking concept is called the Toyota e-Racer, and its purpose is to show that cars in the future can and will be still fun to drive. It was one of a plethora of futuristic concepts that Toyota unveiled on its stand at the Tokyo motor show, that also feature an e-broom. With styling that looks like a sixties Formula One car reimagined in the 23rd century, the e-Racer can carry two people sitting in tandem.
People attending the show will be able to try it out for themselves thanks. They will be able to experience what it would be like to drive it on various circuits thanks to the use of virtual reality (VR) goggles. For now, the Toyota e-Racer is purely a static showpiece, and the company hasn't announced any more information on what its potential performance could be, so it's safe to say that it won't be going on sale anytime soon.
Speaking at the car's reveal, Toyota boss, Akio Toyoda, said: "The birth of the automobile led to 15 million horses being replaced by cars in the United States. But still, we have racehorses. The joy of riding a horse can hold its own against or even outdo what cars have to offer. If there is an obstacle, a horse can avoid it. If there is a hole in the ground, a horse can make its own judgement and jump over it.
"Horses can communicate with people and their hearts. For people who ride them, horses are irreplaceable. Through the evolution of artificial intelligence, I think that cars, too, can also become able to communicate with people and their hearts. I think cars of the future will be like horses."
Precision-made seats and race suits
Placed next to the e-Racer is a machine capable of capturing a person's exact measurements and create a race suit that will fit them perfectly. The tech can also be applied to create a seat that provides a bespoke fit for them, just like the way Formula One drivers' race seats are moulded to their body.
