The estate isn’t dead, it’s just gone electric…

Volkswagen will show a new electric concept car, the ID. Space Vizzion, at the Los Angeles motor show.

Low-slung estate body

Rather awesomely, following on from such other ID electric concepts as the retro-styled Buzz MPV and van, and the ID. Buggy beach buggy, this one seems to resurrect a body shape which we thought to be on the endangered list - the estate. Volkswagen describes it as 'the wagon of tomorrow' and says that it 'combines the aerodynamic characteristics of a Gran Turismo with the spaciousness of an SUV.' To which we say, amen brother - preach!

Styling taken from ID.4

While these are just sketches, the real thing takes its styling cues (at the front at any rate) from the upcoming ID.4 SUV, which will be fully revealed shortly and which will be the second ID. model on sale. Volkswagen says that the ID. Space Vizzion concept follows the styling cues of the rest of the ID family 'yet has a completely independent and progressive character.'

"So far, with our ID. family, we have shown what is possible with electric vehicles in each known car category. With the ID. Space Vizzion we create a new, fully electric segment," says Klaus Bischoff, Head of Volkswagen Design.

590km range predicted

Needless to say, it's based on the Volkswagen Group's hugely flexible new MEB all-electric architecture, and is one of the largest vehicles that will be built on the platform. Volkswagen says that it 'guarantees long ranges, dynamic driving performance and a whole new level of digital networking.'

Best of all, it guarantees a long range - Volkswagen says that the Space Vizzion should have a 590km range on the WLTP test, which is pretty impressive. There are no technical details beyond that, as yet, but it seems likely that it will use a four-wheel drive, two-motor powertrain, which should have pretty impressive performance.

Inside, much of the cabin is made of recycled and recyclable material, including 'AppleSkin' which is an artificial leather made, in part, from the pulp leftover from the production of apple juice.

Wait, did we say the range was the best thing of all? We were wrong - it's that the Space Vizzion will go into production. Volkswagen says it will go on sale in 2021 in production form (ID.5, maybe? Or ID.6?) and that there will be subtly different specific versions for the US, China, and Europe.
