Volkswagen has shown us some early sketches of the new Caddy van.
Sporty looking new Caddy launches in 2020
This time around, the Caddy - which will launch in 2020 - will take on much more overtly sporting styling. Well, it will if these sketches are anything to go by. Saying that "no screw has been left untouched" Volkswagen says that it is aiming for the new Caddy to be the benchmark in the compact van and MPV categories.
"The concept drawings of the panel van variant of the Caddy underline the fact that a new self-confidence will be entering the otherwise so functional and practical vehicle class" said Volkswagen in a statement. "The draft design shows possible configurations: everything different, but still with a high cargo capacity and great variability, which has always made the Caddy attractive to its customers. In short: 100 per cent new, 100 per cent Caddy."
Sculpted side panels
Looking at the sketches, the roofline appears to slope, ever so slightly, and that combines with the heavily sculpted side-panels and the rear end which owes an obvious stylistic debt to the new I.D. electric car family to create a look that's pretty distinctive by van standards. Heck, by any standard. All that's set off by a sleeker front end, with very narrow headlights and a deep front bumper with prominent air intakes.
Slim LED lights
Those slimmer lights are powered by LED technology, as are the rear lights, and the fact that LEDs take up less space than conventional lamps has allowed Volkswagen to make the rear screen much larger, which helps with visibility when reversing (needless to say, the van versions of the new Caddy will also have a non-transparent tailgate and continue to offer swing doors as an option).
The final touches are an ultra-slim radiator grille lifted from the new Golf 8, and larger optional alloy wheels for a little more 'stance.' We'll get to see the new Caddy in both van and 'Life' MPV versions early in 2020, with sales starting soon after.
