Men more likely to be swayed by flash cars...

The term "gold digger" has been inextricably linked with women since time immemorial; however, if the latest research is to be believed then Madonna should have been singing about material boys not girls.

In the build-up to Valentine's Day (it's just a few hours away - pick up a card and some choccies on the way home quick!) AA Insurance polled nearly 17,000 people, asking them how much importance they place in classic status symbols such as a big house, flash car or high status career.

While 'prestige' professions such as surgeons, barristers and architects topped the poll for both sexes (accounting for 32 per cent amongst men and 27 amongst women) that was the closest the poll came to parity between the sexes.

After the top jobs 29 per cent of men (compared to 18 per cent of women) said they'd be impressed by a place in the sun.  Again 29 per cent of men said they'd rate a big house as important compared to 20 per cent of women, and finally 26 per cent of men (16 per cent of women) said they'd ideally like to see their partner driving a high-end car.

The results make for grim reading for men as, on the face of it, it would appear we have overtaken the fairer sex in the shallowness stakes, but there is good news to take from the poll as well. It means we can all quit our stressful jobs, sell the cars and houses whose repayments are crippling us and ditch the designer threads for some comfy tracksuit bottoms and our favourite tee-shirts.

Or the poll could be proof (again) that not even women know what they want in a partner, in which case it's 'as you were'...
