We, and by we I primarily mean me and fellow Complete Car-ist Dave Humphreys, were having a bit of a Twitter argument this week about MPVs and seven-seaters, and whether or not they can actually be considered desirable. The answer is of course that no they can't - nothing that practical can be properly desirable because desire is about things we want, not things we need. However, the Ford S-Max comes reasonably close. There is an all-new one coming very shortly, but the original is still a good thing and it was the first MPV that was designed to be as good to drive, as it was spacious and useful.
We've found a nice 2011 one, from a main dealer, using the 1.6 TDCI diesel (which helps keep the tax costs under control) for 20,950. A big, comfortable, useful seven-seater for the price of a very basic family hatch. Nice one.

Ah, but is there a better way? Check this out - you can have a lower-slung and far more attractive estate body and still squeeze in seven seats. This 2004 Volvo V70 has the old school (old-school run?) flip-up rear facing seats in the boot, so it is a proper seven seater, but with none of the unappealing sensibleness of an actual MPV. Waft around in leather lined comfort, with everyone on board, for a mere 2,950. Utter bargain.
