Mercedes-Benz launches range-topping S 600 saloon

Detroit hosted the world debut of the new V12-engined Mercedes S 600.

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the flagship model of the S-Class range, the S 600, at the Detroit Auto Show. Available exclusively in long-wheelbase form the S 600 is expected to appeal particularly to North American and Asian markets. The top model will go on sale in March.

Mechanicals
The new V12 is almost half a litre larger than the unit fitted to the old S 600, displacing 6.0 litres. Thanks to the use of two turbochargers maximum power is 530hp, with 830Nm of torque available from 1,900- to 4,000rpm. As a nod towards the environment a start-stop function is fitted, which raises the fuel economy to 25.4mpg on the combined cycle compared with the 20mpg of the old S 600. Carbon dioxide emissions are at least 259g/km, which puts the S 600 in the top band for tax.

Standard equipment includes all Mercedes latest safety systems. At night the road is illuminated by the LED Intelligent Light System. Bumps are ironed out by the Magic Body Control suspension with Road Surface Scan. There is also the Driving Assistance Plus package comprising Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, BAS Plus with Cross-Traffic Assist, Distronic Plus with Steer Control and Stop&Go Pilot, PRE-SAFE Brake and PRE-SAFE Plus.

Anything else?
In March the rest of the S-Class range also receives a range of updates. A head-up display can be specified, presenting information directly in the driver's line of sight, including speed, speed limit and navigation instructions. In addition, an optional touchpad can be ordered to control the head unit, allowing smartphone-style touch control and also offering handwriting recognition.

Mercedes has also replaced Collision Prevention Assist with Collision Prevention Assist Plus. This is capable of braking autonomously at speeds of up to 200km/h if the driver fails to respond to the system's warnings. It also responds to stationary vehicles at speeds of up to 50km/h and is claimed to be able to prevent rear-end collisions up to 40km/h.

Of course all the safety assistance in the world is no substitute for paying attention to the road ahead. To ensure a clear view in winter months the S-Class gets an optional heated windscreen.
